94 540i bmw check engine light?

cruising about 80 mph; ck engine light comes on; not hot, plenty of fuel and oil. car starts for a few seconds then sputters and stalls.

stuck on road... in a helluva spot.

Check engine lights on BMWs mean there is a problem with emissions. So that being said....

could be your fuel filter...most states add alcohol to gas in the winter to make the cars start better, but it really wreaks havoc on the fuel system.

could be an O2 sensor, but I don't think that would make your car stop.

could be one of the other sensors...crank possition sensor, cam possition sensor...etc....

Do this....go out to the car, turn the key on to #2 possition, stomp the gas pedal to the floor 5 times right after key is on...this may or may not make the check engine light blink.....if so, watch the blinks....they will tell you what is wrong. The blinks are seperated by long pauses. AKA- it blinks once, long pause, blinks 4 times, long pause, blinks 4 times again, long pause, and 4 times again....this is the '1444' code....take that code to the internet and look it up on google. This will narrow down what you are dealing with.

----this may not work on your car...but worth a shot. I am not sure if the 1994 540i has 'the stomp test' built in or not.-----
