1999 BMW M3 E36 Broken door handle?

greetings I got a 99 m3 E36 and the driver door handle no longer works to open the door. My buddy has the same problem with his e36 318. Just wanna know if anyone else might experience the same issues with the e36 models.

Inside or outside door handle?

I don't know... so I will tell you about both...

First take your door panel off. There are 2 hex screws under little plastic covers behind the handle on the door (not the handle to open the door, the one you use to close it).

There is a plastic surround around the door handle (the open handle). Push it forward and it will slide off, might take some effort.

Unscrew the door lock knob.

Pull the door panel off, you will hear popping from all the clips, some will break, some will not, you can get more if too many break.

Carefully pull the rubber insalation from the panel and unplug the speakers and the mirror control.

Now that you are inside the door you will see how the inside handle is connected to the lock mechanism. If is is disconnected you can easily reconnect it, you might have to unscrew the handle in order to get the rod reconnected.

As for the outside handle... that's a little bit harder since you can't see it but it is the same principle.

You might have to unmount the lock mechanism from the door to reconnect it. Have the window all the way up. Unbolt the window guide (one bolt on the bottom). It comes out easy, but you have to move it the right way to get it out, reverse to get back in.
