1995 BMW 325 rear strut Noise??

Hi Everyone, I have been having a weird noise coming from my back seems like they are from the struts expessially in the cold. I am not 100% sure whats causing it, it makes sort of a crunching scratchy noise, lol if tha thelps has anyone had problems with their rear strusts or shocks that may solve this question? and also how much did it cost to fix??

seeing that it is an older BMW, one of the common failures of the 3-series BMW is the rear shock mount. It's the piece that holds the shock to the body of the car. It's made of rubber and over time starts to crack or break apart causing the shock to lose contact with the body and makes a noise similar to what you describe. the part is a $20 part to replace or you can use aftermarket part ($100) that will last a lifetime. Just search for BMW RSM (Rear shock mount).

you also mention that the sound seems more prevalent in the cold. worn shocks, especially if they've leaked hydraulic fluid or gas, tend to make more noise during the cold during compression. so, it is also possible that your shocks are just worn and are starting to make that noise in the cold.

typically, BMW shocks are pretty worn after 50000-80000 miles. the rear shock mounts tend to fail anywhere from 20000-80000 miles, depending on driving style/conditions.
