89 BMW 735il electrical problem?

I have an intermittent Tail Light/Parking Light problem. Seems like a short. Sometimes the lights work, sometimes they go out when I'm driving. Sometimes stopping the car and re-starting will fix it. Sometime wiggling the rear wiring harness behind the trunk panel, sometimes taking out the bulb...

Is this some "modual" issue in the fuse box? What trips this thing, and why isn't it constant?

The light module is a big black box under the dash on the driver side has about 20 pins on it. However I don't believe that is your problem. If you wiggle the wires and it comes back on it sounds more like a bad ground or a bad wire. Also I have seen problems when you use the wrong type of bulbs on German cars. They come with nickle based bulbs and people put in copper based ones. They conduct electricity different and the change in resistance can cause strange things to happen. Pull out the bulbs and make sure there all silver in color(nickle)

Then start looking for worn wires or ground points that have come loose.

it might be your fuse box...there probably is a short in one of the fuses that controls the tail lights...its probalbly the fuse cause the whole thing is controled by it, not the lightbulb or etc if the they are turning on sometimes...go to your local BMW dealer...they have seen that before
There is a component called "LKM" light control module these do fail and could cause your concern.
I agree with the other poster----bad ground sounds most likely given the nature of your complaint.
