Current rumors are late-2008.

They are definitely coming though and that is about as much as a carrot as BMW is throwing at us right now.

If I had to guess, I would say about 6 months after the formal introduction and sale of the new M3 model. BMW does not like to take the thunder away from its new models, but rather, pace them out so all can share the wealth of media glitz.

Since the 1er will be a re-entry into the small car market for BMW, it is probably being done with the utmost care, even more so than is common at BMW. BMW can be sure of intense public and media scrutiny of their new (to U.S./Canada) compact.

It is currently available in Mexico.
