Regarding BMW cars, what does "E35" or any other "E**" mean to the specific mode

Actually if the "e" follows the model number, it stands for "eta" not "experimental". Eta is the Greek letter for efficiency or economy. These engines are long stroke (under square) and low revving engines designed for high gas mileage. And the "i" means nothing more than injected. Early on, this was significant. Now they are all "i".

He is correct - those are body type markings.

There is another spot "e" can happen - and that is with the model numbers. If the model number ends in "e" that is designating an experimental engine type.

The engine types are:

"i" - Internal Combustion Engine

"d" - Diesel Engine

"e" - Experimental Engine

These are all internal designation codes within BMW referencing the body style. Evolution.

For instance the 3 series, which started in the US as a 320i from 1977 to 1983 was designated as the E21. Then came the E30, then the E36, then the E46 up to the current E90.

Interestingly, with the intro of the new 7 series coming out at a 09 model will be designated the F01 and BMW will now be moving to an F designation on future models.
