BMW claims they are hand build like AMG. I have never seen proof but I have seen inside the AMG factory and indeed AMG engines are built by hand and take 3 hours to assemble. M engines are made mostly by robotic arms in a climate contolled facility with minimal human contact.
The "M" engines are indeed hand built. Which is why no M's are produced in the US...

M and AMG are departments of their respective company. Saleen, Alpina, Roush, etc. are actually other companies that take normal (Mustang GT, M3, etc.) into their shop at a given stage of production and modify it. The different levels of performance and upgrades determines when they pull the car off the normal production line. Alpina from the ground up would be not much more than a shell, little bits of interior and an engine block when Alpina takes over.
/ Well, some M cars are handbuilt, but not all. The M5 engine is handbuilt (third paragraph of website provided), and the early M1 was handbuilt.

M cars are NOT aftermarket BMW's. They are 100% pure BMW cars made by the racing division of BMW (M for Motorsport). The factory serial numbers reflect this, too.

The chassis, transmission, exhaust route, trunk space, and spare tire are all created differently to accommodate the M engine, therefore these cars are built by the BMW Motorsport Division whether by hand or robotics.
Haven't you ever watched TLC? They say "handbuilt" because they pull they car into a shop after the production line and install the upgraded parts by hand. This is the same for all cars. Mustang-Saleen, BMWs, Mercedes, Hondas. Hope this helps! -matt
