It all depends what year you're talking about. 88-94 is pretty good, but stay away from the earlier years. And don't let anyone talk you into a 750i...a total pain to upkeep.

95-01 same thing...stay away from the earlier years as they had the infamous nikasil issue (engine block material was too soft and warped prematurely). The 98-on 740s should be pretty safe and the mileage is not an issue with BMWs. 100k is just breaking in. Make sure you get one with a complete service history. It doesn't have to be serviced at the dealer, but a shop specializing in BMWs would be great.

Check all suspension components. These cars are pretty heavy and the way BMWs are driven sometimes might wear out bushings parts prematurely.

yes, they are smooth powerful rides. as you are now driving a chevette, a couple of things you should know..

a) BMW parts and service is expensive - general durability is better than average, but when the bills come, be prepared to pay.

b) I had a 740, now have a 540 - love the V8 power, it's almost addictive - watch out for the older nikasil blocks.
