2000 BMW 323I Camshaft Position sensor?

I have an error code p0340 and its coming up camshaft position sensor malfunction. Im guessing its the exhaust side being that the exhaust side is more common to go, but my question is when I order the part they are asking me if it is the left or right side. Which side is the exhaust side.

Guessing what is wrong with your car can be costly, time consuming and very frustrating.

Have it re-scanned for free at Autozone or any other parts store that scans OBD2 for free. Intake is at the left side. Exhaust is at the right side.

And your car is an E46, not an E36. The intake cam sensor is at the left front upper side of the engine, behind the vanos solenoid. The exhaust cam sensor is at the right front of the engine, slightly below the valve cover, and above the aircon

compressor.

Your 2000 BMW 323i should be an E-36 with VANOS valve timing. The lower camshaft is the exhaust camshaft. The upper camshaft (intake) is on the driver's side of the car. The intake valve position sensor is on the left side (drivers side) of the engine. The exhaust camshaft position sensor is on the right side of the engine (from the driver's seat.) VANOS and double VANOS provide adjustable valve timing to this engine. It is a very complex system and should only be dealt with by an experienced mechanic with specialized tools who is familiar with VANOS. You would need a diagnostic scan tool to correctly adjust these camshafts.
Left means drivers side Right means Passenger side Exhaust is on the left or right?
